Youth Choruses

Choruses

Da Capo Choir: Ages 5-7
Children learn age-appropriate vocal technique, pitch and rhythm matching skills, and ensemble teamwork.

Lyric Choir: Ages 7-10
This ensemble deepens choristers’ understanding of fundamental vocal technique and develops their ability to perform unison and two-part repertoire.

Treble Choir: Ages 9-12
Choristers strengthen their vocal technique, sight-reading, and musicianship while performing increasingly advanced repertoire as a cohesive ensemble.

Concert Choir: Ages 12-16
At the highest level for unchanged voices, choristers perform challenging repertoire and participate in additional community and invitational performances.

Master Singers: Ages 13-19
As the most advanced youth ensemble, this mixed-voice choir combines changed tenor/bass voices with experienced high school treble voices in the performance of SATB repertoire with artistry and skill.

Formation of each choir is dependent upon enrollment, the financial viability, and the professional assessment of the artistic staff as to the placement of singers.

While most students are placed in the ensemble intended for their age, flexibility is permitted based on the student’s vocal maturity and musical readiness. All singers are auditioned annually, and new members are accepted in May/June, August/September, and January.

Musicianship

Musicianship classes are included in rehearsals for Da Capo, Lyric, Treble, and Concert Choirs. In these classes, singers will study age-appropriate vocal technique and music theory, build sight singing and aural skills, and work on ensemble teamwork. Curriculum is based on Kodály philosophy.

The Kodály method emphasizes the use of singing, folk music, and sequential learning to build musical literacy and appreciation. It focuses on developing aural skills, rhythmic understanding, and music reading through a child’s natural inclination to sing.
